“Planting the Future”: my new cover story for PRISM

Well, I’ve been eager to share this one for a while: my latest writing project, the cover story for the July/August issue of PRISM Magazine. It’s called “Planting The Future” and is focused on the connection between planting trees and fighting poverty. A theme that emerged in a couple of my previous writing projects was how environmental concerns that you and I may shrug off as insignificant can make all the difference in the world for the rural poor in developing countries. But before researching and writing this story I didn’t know much about what deforestation specifically had to do with cycles of poverty.

A couple of months ago, I interviewed Scott Sabin, executive director of Plant With Purpose, a Christian nonprofit organization with a tag line I love: “environmental solutions to humanitarian problems.” I learned a lot, was truly inspired, and gained a tremendous amount of respect for Sabin and his organization. PWP is doing some great work, so please check them out. I also drew on the work and writings of the feisty and inspirational Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan woman who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for planting trees as symbols of democracy.

So, without further ado, I’m pleased to share with you “Planting The Future.” I’d love your feedback, and please forward this blog post to anyone you think would appreciate it. Thanks!
